Unique Traditional Processes
The Magic of Ilfochrome
By Ford Lowcock, Member, Freestyle Advisory Board of Photographic Professionals

I have been printing Ilfochrome since 1981 when it was Cibachrome and participated in field-testing for the then "new" emulsion we now know as Ilfochrome. Ilfochrome is absolutely unique in color and sharpness. No other process can replicate the classic Ilfochrome look, digital or traditional. When I look at an Ilfochrome print, I get absorbed into the image. The image lives inside the material, not on it's surface. It has a depth that just cannot be matched. The purity of the color palette is also unrivaled. No other process can print reds, greens and blues the same as Ilfochrome. Ilfochrome has taught me what color and color printing is truly about. Honestly, if you would really like to understand what masking in Photoshop is about, produce an unsharp, highlight or color mask for printing Ilfochrome. I still love to print on it, teach it and just the look of a beautifully produced Ilfochrome print.

Ilfochrome is absolutely unique in color and sharpness because it uses Azo dyes, which allows the image to be underneath the surface of the paper giving the feeling of more depth to the print. The Azo dyes also creates a wonderful metallic sheen to the image, especially in the silvery grays when printing with a highlight reduction mask.
