Two-day hands-on Toning Workshop with Tim Rudman

By: Tim Rudman

Date: 2014-04-05 - 2014-04-06
Location: Silverprint, 120 London Road, London, SE1 6LF

10.00 am - 5 pm

This practical workshop, hosted at Silverprint in London, will be held using their gallery floor space and the washing facilities in their almost adjacent darkroom.

Inexpensive accommodation (not included) is available only minutes walk away for those who want it and an informal group pub dinner is planned as an optional extra for the Saturday if there is sufficient interest.

Places are very limited and on a first come first served basis and are likely to be booked out quickly.

Making a silver gelatine print can be a very satisfying form of self-expression. But when is it finished? For many the answer has to be 'not until it is toned'. Toning is an essential stage in the making of a fine print. It may subtly add depth and luminosity, improve its archival permanence, or it may be used to add colour or colours to completely change the way the image speaks to the viewer, the atmosphere it creates and the message it conveys. It can be one of the printer's most useful skills.

This hands-on workshop is designed for all who can make a black and white darkroom print and should help them to take their work to another level.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Delegates will NOT be exposing and developing new prints on this workshop but will work with the prints they bring with them for the purpose. There will be plenty of instruction, supervision, handouts and crib sheets and ample playtime for experimentation, so bring plenty of black and white prints and / or lith prints (including plenty of duplicates for comparisons)!

The workshop will cover basic and not so basic techniques using selenium, odourless sepia, gold, iron blue, titanium and copper toners. We will cover archival and aesthetic applications of toning, including the uses of false colours in printmaking.

Students will learn and practice full and split toning, selective, dual and triple toning and some associated colour intensification and solarization.

  • The maximum print size for this workshop will be 10"x8".
  • On booking, instructions will be sent with suggestions for paper types for toning and for other things to bring.
  • Inexpensive overnight accommodation nearby.
  • An optional evening group meal is planned for Saturday evening.

Tim Rudman's exhibition of toned prints from 'Treeworks' will be hanging in the Silverprint Gallery from 3rd April - 1st May and may form the basis of discussion for the techniques used in his work.
