For over thirty years Ray McSavaney has explored various aspects
of photography within the bounds of traditional cameras and darkroom.
His love of the natural environment has resulted in an ongoing project
on the Western landscape. His previous career in urban planning resulted
in projects in an abandoned tire factory and other industrial sites,
urban renewal construction in downtown Los Angeles, portraits of
people on Broadway and Melrose, and an extensive project involving ancient
structures in the Southwest. Other projects include a series of botanical
studies.
An award winning book, entitled Explorations and containing photography
essays by Ray McSavaney, was selected by the American Institute of Graphic
Arts as "One of the Fifty Best Books of the Year." Other work has been published
in West of Eden: A History of the Art and Literature of Yosemite, View Camera,
Outdoor Photographer and numerous other publications.
