Thomas McGovern has been a photographer for over 25 years. His work is in the collections of
the Baltimore Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, among
others. He is the author of "Bearing Witness (to AIDS)" and "Alpha Teach Yourself Black and
White Photography in 24 Hours" and his work has been in over 25 solo and 35 group exhibitions.
He most recent work, "Hard Boys + Bad Girls" recently showed at the Griffin Museum of Photography.
He is an assistant professor at California State University, San Bernardino.

Question:
I haven't made it to San Bernardino campus yet, but hope to do so in the immediate future. I have joined the Redlands Camera Club and it is a wonderful group of people.
I want to convert my 35 negatives to digital. Do you recommend a particular scanner? When it scans, does it render a photo on the computer or just the negative?
Is one brand better for Black and White, which is what I have tons of?

Hi Michael,
A good Nikon scanner is the Coolscan and will do color and b/w and the image appears on your screen. It does nothing to your original negative.
Freestyle has the Coolscan V ED for $599.
