This course explores the role that documentary photography plays in promoting social change, and how documentary photographers and nonprofit organizations can work together. The workshop, while being an introduction to documentary photojournalism, focuses on the narrative aspect of communicating issues across the social and urban environment through the photo storytelling. Through lectures, critiques, and assignments, each student receives the necessary support to research ideas to develop and edit inspiring photo stories for personal projects or professional assignments. Subjects covered include: analyzing the work of documentary photographers engaged in environmental and social issues, working with multimedia, the steps to approach people, and how to work with nongovernmental organizations (NGO). Guest speakers include the communication director of International Rescue Committee.
