Call for Entries for this unique one-week-long photographic workshop conducted at the University of Washington Friday Harbor
Laboratories in Friday Harbor, Washington in the San Juan Islands. Instruction and housing for students is at the Whiteley Center on the
Laboratory campus.
Rod Dresser, a member of the Freestyle Advisory Board of Photographic Professionals and well-respected photographer and lecturer, teaches
the photographic workshop. Rod's photographs are in many museums including the Los Angeles County Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern
Art, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. His work is also in major collections in the United States, Europe and Japan.
Sensual Dunes, Death Valley, California 1984
The curriculum will be the entire traditional black and white process; beginning with negative exposure on day one and a display of mounted
work by the students on the last day. There will be field trips to photograph the landscape and other subject matter on spectacular San Juan
Island. Though there will be much technical information provided, Rod has taught many workshops and feels a considerable obligation to impart
his accumulated knowledge that he has acquired from other masters and 25 years experience. The strongest emphasis will be on vision and
esthetics. Evening lectures will be held on the history of photography, photographic collecting, and the status of the availability of silver
gelatin material.
This workshop will be limited to six students and those chosen must be serious photographers who wish to pursue a career in fine art
photography. Each applicant will be required to submit an electronic portfolio (jpeg) of 10 to 15 images and curriculum vitae to
roddresser@sbcglobal.net. The submission deadline is May 15, 2006.
The application will be reviewed by Rod, Maggi Weston (Weston Gallery) and members of the Friday Harbor Laboratories faculty. Those selected
for attendance will be notified well in advance and sent more detailed information. Should applicants have further questions, please send
them to roddresser@sbcglobal.net.
In addition to University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories, this workshop is sponsored by Freestyle Photographic Supplies and Aperture Magazine.
Freestyle is graciously donating up to $1000 per student to cover transportation and meal expenses for the workshop.
