Robert Hirsch: World In A Jar

The Gallery at the
Creative Center for Photography
proudly presents...

WORLD IN A JAR: WAR & TRAUMA
An exhibition of fine-art photography by:
ROBERT HIRSCH
January 24 - April 1, 2008

The pictorial sculpture WORLD IN A JAR: WAR & TRAUMA curates and re-imagines key components from historical and original images to explore the workings of our collective societal memory involving loss, popular culture, religion, tragedy, and wickedness over the past four centuries.

Using the Shoah as its point of departure, World in a Jar is a free-form montage that rethinks the customary linear narrative format by presenting an archive of what Mr. Hirsch chose to remember, without attaching a fixed ending. Over 800 jars are on display, each one a building block for a new structure. It is a flexible configuration allowing this to be a perpetual work in progress, recreating itself each time it is installed. It permits each photograph to not only present its own split-second historical reference, but also informs the context of the images surrounding it. This open-ended viewing experience, not unlike memory itself, can convey an endless tale that exists outside of chronological time.

Creative Center for Photography

Home of the Freestyle Advisory Board of
Photographic Professionals

Located in beautiful Hollywood California, the Creative Center for Photography is the new home of the Freestyle Advisory Board of Photographic Professionals and reflects the group's (and Freestyle's) philosophy of education and creativity.

With this in mind, Freestyle constructed each room to simultaneously serve as lecture/meeting space and gallery space without having to remove fixtures required for each. By integrating exhibit and lecture functions, Freestyle has created a place of learning that engages visitors.

"The Creative Center for Photography is more than a group of classrooms," says Stephanie Morey, Freestyle's Marketing and Training Coordinator. "Because it combines galleries and classrooms in one, it becomes a place that continuously informs and encourages. Growth as a photographer should never stop, so the Center invites customers to push their own creative limits every time they enter. We are proud to have it as part of our headquarters facility."

For the Grand Opening, the Creative Center was adorned with some of the finest examples of fine art photography available. Visitors were amazed at the variety and quality of the work exhibited. "There isn't anything like this in Los Angeles," said one customer, her friends nodding in agreement. "It's incredible." And everyone was impressed to learn that the images came from our own Freestyle Advisory Board of Photographic Professionals.

"The Creative Center galleries are designed to showcase possibilities - what can be achieved at the highest level," says Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Gerry Karmele. "That is why we will continue to feature the finest art photography created by the highest caliber photographers in the world."

The beautifully appointed learning center prominently features a thirty-seat lecture room, and fifteen seat meeting room with formal conference table and a demonstration darkroom area.

Creative Center for Photography is located at Freestyle Photographic Supplies' landmark Hollywood headquarters facility located at 5124 Sunset Boulevard, Hollywood, California 90027. (323) 660-3460. The Gallery at the Creative Center for Photography is open seven days a week. M-F 9:00 to 6:00, Sat. 9:30 to 4:30.
