For over thirty years, Ray McSavaney has explored various aspects of photography within the bounds of traditional darkroom and conventional cameras. Mr. McSavaney's love of the natural environment, and man's impact on that environment, has resulted in his ongoing projects of Western Americana. This gallery exhibition, printed on fiber-based silver gelatin paper, is a collection of three projects composed over several years. Although the subject matter varies, many elements tie these projects together.
Landscapes - McSavaney's main concentration in the 1970's - has continued to capture his interest in both natural and man made form. Bridges - over the Los Angeles River - began in 1979. Flowers - began in the late 1990's when frequent rains resulting from Southern California's El Nino effect on the environment made it difficult to work outdoors. However, all three projects continue to be a work in progress for McSavaney.
In addition to his award-winning photographic work, McSavaney's book, Explorations, was selected by the American Institute of Graphic Arts as "one of the fifty best books of the year." As a co-founder of Owens Valley Photography Workshops, he initiated his own photographic workshop program in 1991. He has since directed, instructed or been on staff of approximately 200 workshops. McSavaney's three projects will be each displayed separately in their own gallery at the Freestyle Creative Center.
