The world beneath the ocean's surface off the central coast of California is cold, silent and swarming with otherworldly life. "Kanchi", translates from Japanese as "quiet place," is a fitting title for this body of work. When diving, the body moves freely in a weightless, silent, meditative state. The underwater world was Ryuijie’s first source of inspiration and the birthplace of his first photographs. Thirty years later he has come full circle, finding inspiration for images in the big blue. “The water nurtures me, washes away my pain and rewards me with photographs I love.” Photographed in collaboration with assistant Camille Lenore, Kanchi illustrates a deep respect for the Oceans and for the life that inhabits them.
Moving from liquid to solid, Ryuijie captures botanicals frozen in solid ice succeeding in interrupting the life process of various floras and timelessly preserving their beauty.
We invite you to join us and share in the festivities as we showcase a collection of black & white silver gelatin prints by Ryuijie.
