  • “Chance Favors the Prepared Mind” was one of Ansel Adams’ favorite expressions. And it was his own prepared mind that allowed him to so successfully realize his artistic vision.

In this inspirational workshop, the emphasis will be on connecting Ansel’s approach and mastery with today’s tools and technologies, allowing you to better realize your own photographic vision.

You will learn to isolate and evaluate the elements of a scene, translate the literal into the expressive, and use optics and exposure to best effect your photographs, all under the guidance of long-time Ansel Adams assistant and master photographer Alan Ross.

Visits to many of Ansel’s favorite places in Yosemite will provide inspiration and insight, with demonstrations, practice sessions and critique laying the foundation for individual photographic advancement.

Important topics covered during the intensive week will include:
    • How equipment choice impacts your final image
    • Choosing a lens and using it well
    • Optics and exposure
    • Filters—how and when to use them
    • Evaluating a scene & managing the details
    • Tonality
    • Translating what’s in front of you to what’s in your mind’s eye
    • Preparing the image for printing
    • Printing & presentation--bringing your vision to life on paper

Evenings will be spent on group and individual critique sessions, printing demonstrations, and engaging discussions about identifying and expressing personal vision.

By the end of the workshop, you will have the tools and methodology you need to respond to your vision with confidence.

Alan Ross is a master photographer who worked side-by-side with Ansel Adams as his photographic assistant, in the field and in the darkroom, and who knows Ansel’s approach and technique perhaps better than other any photographer today. He was personally selected by Ansel to be the exclusive printer of the Yosemite Special Edition Photographs and expects to make his 100,000th print sometime soon. Alan specializes in helping photographers at any level identify and better express their photographic vision and has led workshops in locations ranging from the scenic Southwest to the mountains of China. His photographs hang in collections and galleries around the world and have been featured in campaigns for companies like Boeing, Nike, IBM and the National Park Service.
