Edward Alfano has been shooting with infrared film for over 25 years. He began his professional career as a commercial photographer and continues to shoot commercially. A Professor of Art at California State University, Northridge since 1989, and currently head of the photography area, he acknowledges that the magic of photography still resides in his own work and he cherishes that "moment" when his students become excited by their own revelations.

QUESTION:
Dear Edward,
I purchased the outdated EFKE Infrared a few weeks ago and I have yet to process a roll that looks right. It just isnt dense, I am using Arista developer Kodak rapid fixer Kodak stop bath and Kodak HCA.
My processing times are 9 minutes for the developer 3 minutes stop bath 4 minutes for fix and two minutes with HCA. All photos were shot at 400ISO and I was using a hand held light meter. What am I doing wrong.

Andrew,
I have only shot 1 roll of EFKE and rated it at 25 ISO, with a red filter and bracketed all over. Film was under to over. Depending on what type you use, a filter will effect exposure enormously.

QUESTION:
Dear Ed,
I teach BW photography at the College of Southern Maryland CSM.
I would like to have a section of the class syllabus and darkroom work on infrared.
We would most likely use the Efke or Rollei I.R. in rolls and sheets..4x5
What subjects and what developers do you suggest?

John,
I have only shot with Kodak HIE. I have developed in D-19, D-76, Acufine, Rodinal and FG-7. They all give differing results as you would expect. Depending on what is the most important characteristic, I would test that developer with these...full answer
